Why Perform Porosity Testing on Porcelain Insulators?

Porosity is one of the key indicators determining insulator quality. Poor firing during production will leave tiny open pores inside porcelain insulators. These porous structures easily absorb ambient moisture, which drastically reduces insulation resistance and triggers leakage current. In severe cases, it leads to total insulation breakdown and unexpected power system faults. Porosity testing is therefore an indispensable quality control procedure for all electrical porcelain products.

Standard Porosity Test Procedure for Porcelain Insulators

In accordance with ANSI and IEC international standards, the dye penetration method is adopted for porosity inspection of ceramic and porcelain insulator shells. The detailed test steps are as follows:
  1. Break the insulator shell into standard test specimens.
  2. Submerge the specimens fully in a 0.5% alcoholic fuchsine dye solution, then apply a constant pressure of approximately 140.7 kg/cm² and maintain the pressure for 24 consecutive hours.
  3. Remove the test pieces after the holding period and conduct preliminary visual inspection.
  4. Further fracture the specimens to expose fresh cross-sections. Observe the internal structure closely:
    • Obvious dye penetration into the porcelain body indicates excessive porosity, and the product fails the test.
    • No dye penetration means the insulator shell meets standard requirements for dense structure and qualified porosity.
