UV Aging Chamber for Composite Insulators: Lamp Choice, Specimens and FAT

UV exposure can change the appearance and surface behavior of a composite insulator housing. A chamber specification must describe the light source, specimen geometry, moisture cycle and measurement records together. A nominal UV lamp count alone cannot tell a buyer whether the intended housing can be tested repeatably.

This guide is grounded in Contune’s UV Accelerated Aging Test Chamber for polymer insulator test brochure. The brochure references IEC 62217, but it does not establish one universal exposure recipe or acceptance limit. Confirm the applicable edition and the purchaser’s qualification procedure before setting the cycle.

Start with the test article

The brochure lists a standard flat specimen size of 75 × 290 mm and 24 standard racks. A complete insulator or curved shed may need a different holder, spacing and exposure plan. Send the supplier the actual specimen dimensions, material, color, intended mounting orientation and quantity. Define whether the question concerns material coupons, molded sheds or finished assemblies.

Specify the light and geometry

Brochure item Reference value
UV source Eight UVA-340 fluorescent lamps, four on each side
Nominal lamp spacing 70 mm center to center
Specimen to lamp center 50 ± 3 mm
Effective irradiation area 900 × 210 mm
Chamber space 450 × 1170 × 500 mm
Overall dimensions Approximately 650 × 1300 × 1480 mm
UV meter UVA/UVB irradiometer optional

The brochure also mentions an adjustable irradiance up to 2.0 W/m²; the reference wavelength and measurement position should be agreed before using this figure as an acceptance criterion. UV output changes with lamp age, so define calibration and lamp replacement records.

Choose a moisture and temperature cycle

The machine supports light, condensation and spray stages. Its temperature range is described as ambient plus 10 °C to 70 °C, with ±1 °C uniformity and ±0.5 °C fluctuation. The irradiated black-panel temperature range is 50–70 °C. The water tank depth is listed as 25 mm with automatic control; the spray system uses eight nozzles, four per side. The actual time in each stage, water quality and exposure duration belong in the approved test method.

Control the comparison

  1. Photograph and identify every unexposed specimen.
  2. Record initial color, surface condition and any specified electrical or mechanical property.
  3. Check lamp type, irradiance measurement, panel temperature and water supply before the run.
  4. Log stage start and stop times, temperature, irradiance, spray and any interruption.
  5. Rotate or redistribute positions only if the procedure allows it, recording every movement.
  6. After exposure, compare with retained controls using the purchaser’s chosen acceptance tests.

FAT and site preparation

At factory acceptance, demonstrate the program and fixed-value modes, lamp and water-shortage alarms, over-temperature protection, spray sequence, temperature indication and data export. Ask to see how irradiance is measured at the specimen plane. Confirm local supply compatibility: the brochure specifies 220 V, 50 Hz and says other input voltages can be customized. Plan drainage, ventilation, water supply and safe lamp access before commissioning.

RFQ data to send

  • Applicable standard edition and exposure sequence
  • Specimen drawings, holder type, number and loading map
  • Target irradiance and calibration method
  • Light, condensation and spray timing
  • Temperature and water quality limits
  • Alarm, report and traceability requirements
  • Electrical supply and installation utilities

UV aging addresses a different stress from conductive pollution. For the latter, see our salt-fog chamber guide.

FAQ

Can the 24 standard racks hold complete composite insulators?

Not necessarily. The brochure specifies 75 × 290 mm standard specimens. Full assemblies require a holder and spacing check against actual drawings.

Is the optional UV meter needed?

If the acceptance procedure requires verified irradiance at the specimen position, include a suitable calibrated meter and recording method in the purchase scope.
